Windsurf and Kitesurf

Tarifa is THE PARADISE of the Surf of Europe.

In the 80s the first surfers began to settle in Tarifa, introducing one of the most popular water sports in the town.

With moderate temperatures throughout the year, any date is good for surfing.

When Kitesurf began to appear a few years ago, Tarifa was the pioneer town of this new sport, since it was spread by many of the Windsurfers resident in Tarifa, among whom you can find several world champions from different years.

The beaches of Tarifa are world famous among windsurfers and kitesurfers for their privileged conditions and location.

In Tarifa, on the Isla de las Palomas, the Los Lances beach begins, where wave surfing is usually practiced. The beach of Los Lances is approximately 7km long and is divided into Los Lances Sur and Los Lances Norte. Los Lances Sur is the part that is within the town of Tarifa and is a swimming area, which is why Wind- and Kitesurfing is forbidden in summer. If we go forward we find Los Lances Norte, where you can practice Windsurfing and Kitesurfing throughout the year and where many of the Kite schools and several beach bars are located.

After about 7km, Los Lances becomes the beach of Valdevaqueros. There are the favorite spots of Kitesurfers with several schools and bars. At the end of Valdevaqueros, about 10km from Tarifa, is Punta Paloma, a beautiful inlet with a large sand dune that invites, especially on days of little wind, to walk and explore.

The beach of Bologna is about 15km from Tarifa. It can be reached comfortably by car, but also by walking along the shore of Punta Paloma if one is a good walker. Bologna is one of the most popular bathing beaches in Spain, where, at the foot of the pine forests, there is the large sand dune, declared a natural monument but one that can be visited without problems.

In Tarifa dominate mainly two winds: Levante and Poniente The Levante comes from the east, and is reinforced by the Strait of Gibraltar. The Levante is hot and often quite strong and durable.

With too strong a wind, local schools usually transfer their classes to the beaches of Palmones and Getares near Algeciras, where the Levante tends to enter with less force.

The West comes directly from the Atlantic and blows towards the interior, causing good and high waves. This wind is cooler, which is much appreciated in summer. The Poniente also tends to be less strong than the Levante, and therefore also suitable for beginners of Windsurfing and Kitesurfing.

For all Wind & Kitesurfers who travel by plane, it is advisable to rent a car to reach the beaches and suitable points according to the wind conditions. It must also be taken into account that the car has a roof rack to facilitate the transport of materials.
